The Ann Arbor T-shirt Company is composed of dozens of artists, screen printers, art techs, logistics professionals, embroiderers, and support staff, all operating out of Ann Arbor, Michigan (about 40 miles west of Detroit). We proudly design, print, and embroider the majority of our products completely in our Ann Arbor, MI factory.
The company was founded as a dorm room project between two friends at the University of Michigan. What makes our products unique is that our workers receive fair wages, healthcare, 401k matches, and meals. Our machines, inks, and most inputs are U.S. sourced, and our shirts are mostly made of U.S. cotton. Producing in-house keeps quality up and prices low.
We love giving people fun ways to express themselves and strike up conversations with their neighbors. Our illustrators and designers create the artwork, which art techs then convert into component screens. Skilled screen printers and their apprentices apply the ink through these screens using top-of-the-line M&R carousel presses manufactured in Illinois.
When you buy one of our shirts, your money is distributed across the country. Approximately 35% stays in Ann Arbor for design, printing, and production, 22% goes to Seattle for advertising and platform fees, 6% to Cincinnati for apparel distribution, 4% to Atlanta for logistics, 4% to Roselle, IL for printing presses and equipment, 4% to Texas and the Southwest for cotton farming, 3% to Toluca, Mexico for fabric sewing, and 1% to Pineville, NC for screen printing inks.
Screen printing is an art form, and we take it seriously. We hire, train, and retain skilled professionals through internal apprentice and educational programs. We also use top-notch QCM inks, which are more vibrant, durable, and environmentally friendly than cheap alternatives. Investing in the best equipment, like our M&R presses, allows our printers to work faster with less waste, enabling us to create high-quality products at a lower cost.
If you're ever in the Ann Arbor area, stop by for a free tour and see how we make your apparel. The tagless tag is printed on the fabric inside the collar, so you can't even feel it. Our shirts are slightly tapered for a modern fit, and they're pre-shrunk, but like any high-cotton product, they'll still shrink slightly in the wash.
